ARTIST STATEMENT

The Arctic is being profoundly transformed by global warming. This has implications for the earth’s marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Changes to the Arctic climate system have resulted in less predictable weather patterns, delayed sea ice formation, earlier sea ice break-up, glacier degradation, thawing permafrost with more methane release and increased coastal erosion.

“The most important thing for people to know about the governance of the Arctic is that we have a chance now to act to maintain the integrity of the system or to lose it. To lose it means that we will dismember the vital systems that make the Arctic work. It's not just a cost to the people who live there. It's a cost to all people everywhere.”
— Sylvia Earle (American Scientist)

I work in thematically coherent series, this latest project, Arctic (Nature) Series, is a response to a journey of a lifetime to the polar circle. The impact of the arctic’s geographical environment and wildlife touched me to the core. The experience is one I continue to reflect upon and process in the abstracted arctic landscapes exhibited as part of Open Studios.
